93 Ford 7.3L Turbo Fueling Issues?

It is a 1993 Ford F-250 7.3L Turbo Diesel. I live about 35 miles from work, about 2 or 3 miles from work I noticed it losing power, i.e. the rpms would surge and drop when ever i gave it throttle. I pulled off and tried to rev the engine but it sputtered and died. I started it. tried to rev it, it died again. I popped the hood and hit the schrader valve on the fuel filter and got nothing but air. I did this 2 more time, on the 3rd time it fired and i was able to make it to work. On the way home it did the same thing, about 3 miles from the shed it started loosing power again, this time i kept my foot in it and got it home. It was single digits and negatives all day but it's been negative 20's and run just fine. The station I buy fuel from adds their own cetane. Maybe i got some bad fuel, I am going to put a bottle of Heet in it tomorrow. I am just wondering how i made it 30 miles with out problem.
