Sound card problems-Hardware?

Hey I saw your add on craigslist and was wondering if you could fix a problem with my computer. Every time I put a cd in my computer and try to play it my computer says it cant play it because there might be a problem with your sound device, or one might not be installed which that cant be it cause I used it all the time before the thing is I got a bunch of viruses before which wrecked my computer thank god for recovery discs lol but now I cant hear anything not even stuff from youtube I figured that the viruses burned my sound card out or maybe a power surge burned it out anyway would you be able to help with this problem I'm not very knowledgeable on hardware I'm more of a software kinda guy thank you sorry for not proffreading i'm in a rush thank you:) peace
